Surge is one of the first real-time virtual reality music videos created for the new generation VR headsets. It gives an amazing insight into the possibilities of virtual reality as a medium for music videos. The experience shows an abstract meditation on the evolutionary process and its relentless march towards complexity. The seamless fusion between music and visual effects come to life in an overwhelming experience which transports the viewer into a world caught in a permanent sunset, inhabited by mysterious abstract creatures. You have to see it to believe it.
With three other companions Arjan van Meerten started House of Secrets in 2004.
Besides animation and visual effects for commercials they made a series of their own animations. Arjan worked on and co-directed “Geweldenaren van Ver” and “Cruise Patrol”
After this he became fascinated by the synergy between music and animation and he made the music videos “Blackhole” and “From Below” in his spare time.
In 2013 he became very interested in VR, which became a lot affordable at that time. After buying the oculus DK1 he started working on a VR music experience called Surge that took about 2 years before finishing it. Surge became very popular, because it was one of the first VR music experiences at that time. Later that year Surge was shown at the Sundance festival in the New Frontier program.
In 2016 Arjan started working on a new music experience named Apex, funded by WeVr and KaleidoscopeVR. Apex premiered at the Tribeca film festival in 2017.
At that time Arjan also started working on the VR game Kin with House of Secrets. Kin was released in 2017 on the gearVR and the Oculus rift.
