2025 Kaohsiung Film Archive x Villa Formose Immersive: Taiwan-France Immersive Creation Residency Program

Kaohsiung Film Archive, in collaboration with CENTQUATRE-PARIS, the CNC (Centre National du Cinéma et de l’image animée), the French Office in Taipei, and the French Institute, proudly continues the “Villa Formose Immersive” residency program—inviting creators from France and Taiwan to jointly develop immersive works with international impact.

1. Program Overview

Villa Formose Immersive is a bilateral residency program aimed at fostering creative exchange and collaboration between Taiwan and France in the XR field. In 2025, two residency tracks will be open for application:

• Taiwan XR Prototype Residency (🇫🇷 → 🇹🇼):
  Invites artists based in France to undertake a one-month residency in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, to develop a prototype for an immersive experience.

• France XR Prototype Residency (🇹🇼 → 🇫🇷):
  Invites artists based in Taiwan to undertake a one-month residency in Paris, France, to develop a prototype for an immersive experience.

2. Eligibility

「Taiwan XR Prototype Residency 」

Applicants must meet the following requirements :

1. Be 18 years of age or older

2. Hold French nationality or a valid residence permit/visa valid through March 2026

3. Be able to communicate in English and/or Chinese

4. Have at least one professional experience in immersive creation

「France XR Prototype Residency 」

Applicants must meet the following requirements :

1. Be 18 years of age or older

2. Hold Taiwanese nationality

3. Be able to communicate in English and/or French

4. Have at least one professional experience in immersive creation

*This program is open to artists across all fields of immersive creation, including but not limited to :

• 360° VR films

• Interactive VR/AR experiences

• Mixed reality installation art

• XR games

• Immersive exhibitions

• Fulldome films

3. Program Benefits

「Taiwan XR Prototype Residency 」

1. Round-trip economy airfare from Paris to Taiwan

2. One-month accommodation and workspace at Pier-2 Art Center in Kaohsiung

3. Mentorship in XR production and distribution

4. Access to VR headsets and relevant equipment

5. NT$500,000 (approx. €13,700) in creative funding, covering production costs and daily allowance

「France XR Prototype Residency 」

1. Round-trip economy airfare from Taiwan to Paris

2. One-month accommodation and workspace at CENTQUATRE-PARIS

3. Customized workshops, meetings, mentorship, and networking opportunities to support project development

4. Access to VR headsets and related equipment (subject to availability)

5. NT$500,000 (approx. €13,700) in creative funding, covering production costs and daily allowance (€50/day)

▎2024 Taiwan-France XR Residency Selected Projects ▎

The selected project for the 2024 Taiwan-France Immersive XR Prototyping Residency (Villa Formose Immersive – XR Prototyping Residency), “Pietra, Dreamed City”, will be collaboratively developed on-site by director Joséphine Derobe and sound designer Colm Galibert.

Pietra, Dreamed City is a collective piece in virtual reality inspired by the architectural and musical world of Pinuccio Sciola, a great Italian sculptor deeply connected to nature and art for all, who sculpted rocks to reveal the memory of the universe through the song of stones.
